Proper and improper fractions

A proper fraction represents an amount less than 1, that is, the numerator is less than the denominator, e.g. \(\frac{1}{3}\), \(\frac{3}{4}\), \(\frac{5}{8}\), \(\frac{24}{25}\) are all proper fractions.

An improper fraction represents an amount greater than or equal to 1, that is, the numerator is greater than or equal to the denominator, e.g. \(\frac{4}{3}\), \(\frac{7}{4}\), \(\frac{9}{7}\), \(\frac{12}{12}\), \(\frac{25}{4}\)
